How I got started on my journey to renewable energy and sustainability.

I got started in my journey to renewable energy back in Kenya when I got exposed to an energy efficiency project housed at the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) and funded by UNDP and World Bank Group (Global Environment Facility (GEF)).

The project was implemented by UNDP in Kenya and during my tenure in the project, I had just finished studying Bachelor of Science (BSC) in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Nairobi in the year 2004. I worked for about two (2) years at the project before proceeding with my sustainability studies at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

At the University of Auckland, I specialized in sustainable technology (renewable energy and energy efficiency) while doing my final Master’s thesis at the University between 2006 to 2008. After completion, I worked with the German International Cooperation (GIZ), formerly known as GTZ. At GIZ, I specialized in bioenergy specifically agro-industrial biogas projects and sustainability.

I later worked for Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) (now called Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority) in the renewable energy department where I focused on the solar energy component and energy efficiency. I assisted in developing solar PV regulations for Kenya and worked there for about two years before getting an opportunity to relocate to the United States of America (USA).

After relocating to the USA, I worked for the World Bank Group (GEF) in Washington DC where I reviewed renewable energy projects requesting for GEF funding. After my assignment at GEF ended, my wife and I formed the company SwitchtoSolar Online MKT, LLC, where we raise renewable energy awareness targeting homeowners and business owners to go solar while providing tips and guides for sustainability.

The idea here is to generate good solar leads while promoting the idea of sustainability online. At the moment, I am studying data science and machine learning, and how to apply these new concepts in the area of sustainability and renewable energy. We will be sharing information on how these new concepts can be applied to assist in sustainability and decision making in the area of solar energy.
